报告摘要:

Soft and living matter exhibit unique mechanical properties compared to the conventional material. For example, living cells manifest both viscous and elastic characteristics when undergoing deformation and dynamically regulate these mechanical properties together with the cell shape and volume through a variety of cellular activities. Accurate measurement of the morphology and viscoelastic properties of living cells is thus essential for understanding the microscopic origin of cell mechanics and its relation to cell responses and functions. In this talk, the speaker will present unique atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques for probing the multi-scale mechanics of soft and living matter and the mechanical heterogeneity of the living cells. The technique is capable of measuring cell height, volume, Young’s modulus and viscosity of living cells simultaneously. The experiments demonstrate that the AFM-based platform opens up a whole new realm of investigation at nanoscale for a range of interesting problems associated with the viscoelastic property of soft surfaces, such as those made of droplets, bubbles, polymers, living cells and tissues.

报告人简介:

Dr. Guan obtained his Phd in HKUST in 2016. He has been a visiting scholar to the University Grenoble Alpes, France, working with Prof. Charlaix. He is now an assistant professor in the department of physics, HKUST. In the recent years, he has developed an unique method based on AFM to measure the multi-scale mechanics of soft and living matter. He has published some papers using this novel method in the Journals such as: PRL, PR-Applied, Langmuir, Sci. Reports, PRE, Biophysical J. His results was lately highlighted by the American Physical Society’s Physics Focus “Probing cell squishness”.
